HETEROGENINIŲ GRUPIŲ DIDAKTIKA: SPECIALIEJI POREIKIAI BENDROJO LAVINIMO MOKYKLOJE (DIDACTICS OF HETEROGENEOUS GROUPS: SPECIAL NEEDS IN A MAINSTREAM SCHOOL
Alvyra Galkienė

The book supplements the collection of books dedicated to the problems experienced by students with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream schools. It should be useful for students on various specialised courses of Education Studies as well as for practicing teachers. The book views the phenomenon of integrated education in a wider sense than usual, i.e. the aims of education, content and organisational principles and tendencies are considered from the aspect of didactics of heterogeneous groups. With an active movement of peoples in Europe, the variety of opportunities and needs at school is created not only by students with SEN but also by those with a different cultural background, speaking different languages. Didactic principles which become clear while educating students with SEN are universal. They can be always applied in a creative way when a variety of students’ needs meets in the same educational space. The book analyses the principles of creation and successful functioning of a heterogeneous community, which is an important condition for efficient education. Interpersonal trust, safety, positive emotions guarantee the stability of motivation. Differentiation and individualisation of education is a dimension of favourable educational environment.  Teachers of a modern school can no longer implement the directive content of education – they create it themselves.  The tune between individual needs of a student and requirements of the society are the tools which help the educator in creating a functional, child-oriented system of education. The book discusses learning characteristics of students with SEN in a mainstream school and principles of individualisation of their study programmes. The problem of organisation of education of heterogeneous groups is examined by discussing aspects of formation of the most favourable learning environment for each student, organisation of special support, cooperation and coordination of activities, organisation of lessons in a heterogeneous classroom.  Special needs of the students stimulate collaboration culture in the whole school community. Team work of the teachers, the need for planning space and time require from the teacher new lesson management skills. The book provides examples which help to understand some educational reality phenomena in the heterogeneous environment.

SPECIALIŲJŲ POREIKIŲ MOKSLEIVIŲ SOCIALINIŲ GEBĖJIMŲ UGDYMAS (DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL SKILLS OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS)
Daiva Vitkauskaitė

The publication is intended for special and social pedagogues of special schools, educational centres and care homes for children and teenagers with mild and moderate learning difficulties. We believe that teachers working in care homes and schools with integrated classrooms can also make use of the suggested methodologies. It presents teaching methods on how to offer economic education, which helps the students to realise how to manage their budget, their home economy, how to communicate in a business manner, how to communicate with the members of the community, how to carry out certain DIY tasks.; the book also contains an after-school experimental educational program of social skills for younger pupils. These suggestions should make it easier for the teachers and students to develop social competence of students with mental disability. It should be mentioned, however, that this publication should not be viewed by the educational community as a compulsory and fixed dogma. The suggestions should be applied flexibly.

SPECIALIOJO UGDYMO KAITOS BRUOŽAI (FEATURES OF SHIFT IN SPECIAL EDUCATION)
Jonas Ambrukaitis

The collection consists of articles published between 1993 and 2004, in the period of intensive change of educational paradigm and creation of a new school. The main attention is focused on the three main spheres of school development. The first is education of children with developmental disorder in the wide sense, viewing the problem from the aspect of the system of integrated education. The second is narrower and more concrete: speech and language education of children with learning difficulties. The third problem under discussion is professional competence of a mainstream and special teacher. We would like to believe that these peculiar signs of time have a certain sustainable value in creating a more humane, democratic system of education of children with special educational needs in the country, that they can help to avoid unproductive search, mistakes both in developing a general special education policy and in solving concrete teaching problems. While re-editing the articles, their References Lists were made uniform; the texts of the articles were reviewed from the linguistic point of view. At the end of each article there is a reference to the source of its first publication. The collection is meant for teachers, students of the study program Education Studies, special educators and other persons who care about the future of Lithuanian school and especially about the problems of educating children with learning difficulties.
